The dolphin calf at Dolphin Island which made her public appearance in April now has a name. Her name, Isabelle, is picked from more than 800 entries in a 10-week naming contest.
The name was submitted by Nicholas Berry-Smith from Australia, who joined one of the Dolphin Island interaction programmes in April.
Nicholas said the name was picked by his daughter, Mikayla. Isabelle is the name of Mikayla’s best friends from Kindergarten. “She was very excited to hear that she was given the honour of naming the beautiful calf,” he said of his daughter.
Catching up with Isabelle
The dolphin calf, Isabelle, was born on 17 December 2014 and made her first public appearance in mid-April with her mother, Tian Tang. She is thriving and continues to nurse well, as the veterinary team and trainers continues to monitor both mother and calf.
Isabelle, now six months old, is independent, playful and curious. Adrian Penny, Director of Operations at S.E.A. Aquarium and Dolphin Island said, “She invents games to play, with her favourite being to release a bubble at the bottom of the lagoon, and following the bubble up to the surface before bursting it with her rostrum. She also loves using her mouth to ‘catch’ streams of water from the water hose.”
He added, “Isabelle is a fast learner and loves the attention from our trainers. She has also built a close bond with the rest of our dolphin family.”
If you wish to catch a glimpse of Isabelle, you can keep a lookout for her when visiting S.E.A. Aquarium and Adventure Cove Waterpark.
You can also get up-close and learn about dolphins through a series of interaction programmes at Dolphin Island.
S.E.A. Aquarium and Dolphin Island are accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), ranking among the best zoos and aquariums in the world.
