Engaging and inspiring preschool teachers through ECDA Learning Journey

Enriching Childhood: It Takes a Village. This is the theme of this year’s ECDA Early Childhood Conference (30 Sep – 1 Oct 2016) which highlights the importance of strong partnerships between families, pre-school centres and the community in raising a child.

The Conference comprises a series of keynote and plenary presentations by overseas and local experts, hands-on workshops and learning journeys to places of educational value such as National Gallery Singapore, the Peranakan Museum, and S.E.A. Aquarium.

As part of their learning journeys, 50 preschool teachers visited the S.E.A. Aquarium on 16 September. The 2-hour session focused on how to improve the quality of young children’s learning with a first-hand experience of issues such as sustaining marine life and valuing diversity beyond their classrooms. In order to know what their students will be learning at the aquarium, the preschool teachers were guided by our educators throughout the learning journey.

The teachers visited the Ocean Dome which simulates the feel of walking into an actual seamount.
At the discovery pool, one of the highlights of the tour. Teachers were encouraged to touch the marine animals, which provided a more up-close experience with the black sea cucumber, knobbly sea star and other marine invertebrates.

They also viewed winning art works of the Recycling Art Competition 2016. These art works were made by preschool children using recycled and reused materials. Such activities enable children to express their values and creativity, while doing their part for environmental conservation.

Come 30 September (Friday), Mr Lim, Director of Education at S.E.A Aquarium will be holding a workshop at the ECDA Early Childhood Conference. This is in conjunction with the learning journey above to delve deeper into the topic of “Learning through Stories, Values and Technology @ The Aquarium & Museum”.

Workshop participants will learn and discuss how they can integrate stories, values and technology to pre and post learning journey activities to make the whole experience more engaging, enriching and memorable.
