Healthy Ocean, Healthy Us: free-to-download learning package for preschools

Young children learn best through engaging stories, mutual sharing, and with plenty of colourful images and movements to capture their attention. This is why we created Healthy Ocean, Healthy Us – our new free-to-download learning package designed for Kindergarten 1 and 2 students.

Healthy Ocean, Healthy Us is created to help young children express ideas and feelings through movement, and learn to observe and be aware of the world they live in. At the same time, it helps them better understand the importance of responsibility, care and respect for living things and the environment.

The package includes all learning materials and printable templates required to run the 30 to 45-minute programme, which comprises four segments:

  • Sharing and discussion of marine life and conservation priorities
  • Storytelling using props such as headbands and stick puppets
  • Sorting activity: identifying marine animals and marine litter
  • Recap and review

Gavin Lee, Senior Manager of Education at S.E.A. Aquarium, shares his views:

“We hope that pre-school teachers can make full use of this complimentary lesson package, and use it as an education tool in school to impart the importance of caring for our ocean. With this, children can learn about ocean conservation in a fun and engaging manner, and find out what they can do to keep our ocean healthy.”

Healthy Ocean, Healthy Us was officially launched at ECDA’s Early Childhood Conference 2017  (6 – 7 Oct). The Education Team from S.E.A. Aquarium presented this lesson package at the Central Stage on 6 October at 10am.

The young audience peppered our education team with questions even before the presentation started.
The presentation started with questions about marine life before launching into the story.
Engaging the audience through the use of stick puppets.
Messages of ocean conservation were reinforced through hands-on activities.
Back at our booth, guests were intrigued by the bamboo shark, horseshoe crab and other marine life in the mini habitats.
