Ah, the December holidays. A time for outings with friends and family, and for immortalising these fun and precious moments with a ton of pictures. From now till 6 January 2019, learn about why certain marine animals glow underwater at the S.E.A. Aquarium’s Glowing Ocean event, through a series of fun and experiential elements that double up as Instagrammable backdrops.
But that’s not all. There’s also a photo contest, #RWSGlowingOcean, where you stand to win a smart watch worth S$599! Simply:
- Head down to the event
- Snap a photo of any event highlight that best captures a ‘glowing Christmas’
(entirely up to your interpretation – so get as creative as you like!)
- Tag us @rwsentosa with the hashtag #RWSGlowingOcean
- Ensure your profile is set to ‘public’ so we can see your post
To help you out, we’ve come up with a list of Instagrammable spots, photography tips, and even suggested shots at the event.
The Glow Room
Forget flying overseas just to take hype photos by a graffiti wall. As a dark room with ultraviolet light and walls for guests to draw on with glow-in-the-dark ink, each day offers a different Instagrammable backdrop depending on how guests for the day express their creativity.
Suggested shots: #hypebae, #squadgoals, too cool for school
Tip: for the full ‘glow’ effect, wear white/light colours and don’t use flash
Crazy Colourful Corals (Art Installation)
Here at the S.E.A. Aquarium, we strive to educate through fun and interactive experiences. The wall of foam noodles in the picture above is, in fact, an art installation inspired by the flowing coral tentacles, meant to simulate what it’s like for fishes to swim among coral reefs. That, and it makes for a pretty trippy photo backdrop. And of course, kids love it too!
Suggested shots: frontal, casual lean-in (do be gentle with the ‘coral’ tentacles!)
Tip: apply the rule of thirds, framing your photo in such a way that the wall of tentacles looks never-ending
Joyous Jiggly Jellies (Moon Jellies Habitat)
The sea jellies habitats at the S.E.A. Aquarium give guests the chance to get up close and personal with some of the ocean’s most enchanting creatures, intriguing adults and kids alike. The Moon Jellies habitat, in particular, is an all-time favourite photo spot of regular Aquarium guests because of the different coloured hues the Moon Jellies illuminate according to the habitat’s lights.
Suggested shots: silhouette, gazing at sea jellies in awe and wonder
Tips: tap on different areas of your phone screen to test out different levels of exposure; use the aquarium lighting to illuminate your subject’s face
Imaginarium (Fairy Lights)
Fairy lights make everything look more magical, period. And of course, the term ‘fairy lights’ also happens to be synonymous with ‘Christmas lights’ – which means that a shot here would by default capture a ‘glowing Christmas’. Need we say more?
Suggested shots: #findyourlight
Tip: cheat your angles to ensure that your face still favours the camera while you find your light
Imaginarium (Art Installation)
At Imaginarium, be transported into the depths of the ocean with an installation meant to (artistically) represent what it’s like to live underwater. This also means it leaves the most room for creativity when it comes to photos. As its nomenclature suggests, let your imagination run wild!
Suggested shots: levitation
Tip: relax your body and facial muscles to make the jump look as effortless as possible
Here's how you can nail that Instagram shot when you head down to S.E.A. Aquarium's Glowing Ocean! Haven't bought your tickets? Get yours at bit.ly/GlowingOcean2018 NOW.
