Special preview of S.E.A. Aquarium Careers for ECG coordinators and counsellors

For students with an interest in marine life, tourism and hospitality, S.E.A. Aquarium Careers is one educational programme that exposes them to the different career options available. To help educators better understand this programme and how it benefits students, we held a programme preview for Education and Career Guidance (ECG) coordinators and counsellors on 23 February 2018.

Gavin Lee, Senior Manager of Education at S.E.A. Aquarium, welcomed the 100 ECG coordinators and counsellors and gave them an overview of the programme.

Seasoned professionals from our Curatorial, Animal Health and Research, and Aquarium Operations team elaborated on their job scope, as well as the qualifications typically required for their job.

Dr Alfonso Lopez, Director of Animal Health and Research, shared what it is like to provide veterinary care for more than 100,000 marine animals at S.E.A. Aquarium.
Operations Team Manager Jasmine Chu provided an insider view of the day-to-day operations at the aquarium.

Following the presentations, attendees enjoyed a short tea break, during which they mingled with the presenters and members of the Education Team to find out more about the programme. After the break, they visited the different work areas of our professionals, who shared more details about their job and ‘offices’.

At the back-of-house area, Senior Aquarist James Hong explained the many facets of an aquarist’s job and some of their tools of the trade, such as diving gear.
William Tan, Assistant Manager of Animal Health and Research, showed the attendees around the laboratory. He also shared more insights about their work, including the different types of machines used to run various tests such as blood tests and fecal tests.
Attendees were also treated to a Manta Ray feeding session at the back-of-house area, at the top of the Open Ocean Habitat.

Group photos with the ECG coordinators and counsellors.

If you missed this preview, do keep a look out for the next one in September. More information on September’s preview of S.E.A. Aquarium Careers will be posted on this blog closer to the date.
