From 17 January 2016, visitors to S.E.A. Aquarium will get to see the travelling exhibition Oman: Understanding & Coexistence which has been in more than 70 cities around the world.
Those who missed the exhibition at Singapore’s National Library last year can now find it at the Maritime Experiential Museum, part of Resorts World Sentosa’s S.E.A. Aquarium.
In this exhibition, you’ll find Omani artefacts, paintings, Arabic calligraphy and posters depicting life in Oman from the past and present. Read about the practice of Islam in daily life, contemporary Omani society and the role of women in the country.
There is also a copy of an ancient manuscript written by Prophet Mohammed in 629 which led to the establishment of Islam in Oman.
The exhibition will take over the area next to the Jewel of Muscat (a replica 9th century Arabian dhow that was gifted by the Sultanate of Oman to Singapore in 2010), and the multipurpose hall at the basement level.
To access the Jewel of Muscat area, you’ll need to have purchased tickets to Typhoon Theatre; no additional charge is required for the multipurpose hall.
Tip: Visit from 7 to 9 February to get your name written in Arabic by calligraphy artists for free.
Why at Maritime Experiential Museum?
The Maritime Experiential Museum has some unusual ties to Oman.
Back in 2010, Singapore received an Omani gift, which took five months to arrive – The Jewel of Muscat, a replica of a 9th century Arab dhow.
The ship, which was built using 9th century shipbuilding technology, undertook at 6,630km journey via the ancient Maritime Silk Route to Singapore, utilising some 9th century navigational techniques.
It arrived safely on 3 July 2010. The Jewel was eventually housed at The Maritime Experiential Museum, where it still stands today.
Visit the S.E.A. Aquarium to see the Omani exhibit and the Jewel of Muscat.
